About Stone in Bloom




Steeped in history the Staffordshire town of Stone is midway between The Potteries to the north and Stafford to the south. An ancient canal market town set in the stunning River Trent valley, with the Trent and Mersey canal running through the town. Stone is an attractive destination for the thousands of tourists and visitors arriving in the town by narrow boat each year.

In 2008 after 23 years, a wholly independent and small Stone in Bloom group was set up and with financial support from Stone Town Council, has maintained Stone’s entry to the Heart of England in Bloom competition , winning gold in the Large Town Category every year since.

In 2011 Stone were awarded gold in the Large town category, gold as overall winners of that group and best of all for the very first time have been entered into The 2012 Britain in Bloom National finals. Other finalists competing against Stone are Huntingdon, Belper , St Helier ,Dumfries ,Chichester, Coleraine, Truro, Scarva and Rhyl.

Stone Town Council, Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council are strong supporters of Stone in Bloom. Streetscene work tirelessly all year round keeping the Town clean, neat and tidy and most importantly growing and supplying the hanging baskets and wonderful floral displays that adorn the Town.

Each year the support and hard work of voluntary community groups and individuals grows. In 2011 Stone in Bloom boasted a work force of 750 volunteers with an age range of 4-73 years who put in 1,860 hours of work and planted 3000 Daffodil Bulbs. 500 Wild flowers. 7000 bedding plants. 125 Shrubs and 300 trees.

Stone in Bloom is totally dependent upon raising its own funding and the group organise many events, amongst them; A quarterly quiz, Guest Speakers, Pie and pea Suppers. Sponsorship of Aslan the litter picking white German shepherd dog. Talks entitled ‘It’s not just flowers’, spreading the word of Stone’s In Bloom campaign for gold.

In addition we organise our own very popular ‘In Bloom Pub of the Year’ and ‘In Bloom Restaurant of the Year’. Best Residents garden. School competitions.  Poster competition / Miniature gardens, / ‘School in Bloom’.
